This interactive Staff Development Day provides in-depth professional learning for teams of teachers, STEM Coordinators and/or individual K-6 generalist teachers with responsibility for preparing for the new K-6 Science & Technology syllabus. In this workshop, participants will:

  • Learn the new structure and philosophy of the new K-6 Science & Technology syllabus, so they in turn will be able to best teach and support student learning
  • Learn what is new content and what is maintained
  • Determine the optimal ways to scope and sequence the new K-6 Syllabus and prepare new scope and sequences
  • Identify relevant, engaging  and easily achievable experiments in each Stage
  • Start modifying programs in preparation for implementation of the new syllabus
  • Unpack Design and Digital Technologies and find opportunities to integrate into K-6 programs
  • Unpack Creating Written Texts and find opportunities to integrate into K-6 programs

Workshop Delivered by Simon Crook


Dr Simon Crook is a very experienced K-6 Science & Technology teacher and provider of professional learning, with a PhD in Physics Educations Research (USyd) and a BSc (Hons) in Physics (Manchester). He has been working with many primary schools and school systems to best prepare their teachers and students for the new syllabuses over the past 10 years, including his regular partnership schools. Simon was actively involved in the syllabus consultation process. In addition, Simon has been in regular dialogue with STANSW, NESA and The University of Sydney, as well as having articles published in The Conversation, ABC Splash and a forthcoming book chapter regarding new K-6 syllabuses and K-6 science teaching.
